WHAT'S HAPPENING IN TRIAD HIGH SCHOOL LACROSSE?

Five lacrosse players from Triad high schools played in the NC Great 38 High School All-Star Game on Sunday, May 16 in Charlotte:  midfielder Sam Pulliam and defender Jordan Smith from Forsyth Country Day; defender Logan Brawley from West Forsyth; defender Jacob Erickson from Ragsdale; and midfielder Kevin DePopas from Grimsley.  DePopas scored a goal for the Black team, while Pulliam had an assist for the winning Blue team.

Congratulations to the Grimsley Whirlies on beating both RJ Reynolds and Northwest Guilford in the state playoffs to advance to the state semifinals.  The 12-5 Whirlies, who played the Triad's toughest high school schedule, earn this year's honor as the Triad Blackhawks' Top Team in the Triad, ending a two-year run by the Page Pirates.  Congratulations to Coach John Burns and the Grimsley Whirlies!!   Congratulations also to Coach Mark Goldsmith and North Carolina Assistant Coach of the Year John Wright and their Northwest Guilford Vikings, who finished with the school's best-ever record of 16-1 and a berth in the state playoff quarterfinals.  Congratulations also to Coach Jim O'Neill of RJ Reynolds, selected as North Carolina's outstanding high school coach.

Congratulations to Grimsley High School, who beat Mt. Tabor to take the championship of the Proehlific Park indoor holiday 8 v 8 tournament at Proehlific Park on Monday, December 28.  Grimsley was also a finalist in the November 15 Viking Games in Greensboro, where they lost to Charlotte Myers Park.  Watch out for the Whirlies!

Private schools have had the public schools' number in NC high school lacrosse, maintaining a healthy power rating gap that has generally been widening since 2002.  Public schools did, however, close the gap slightly this past season.  Club teams have generally become more competitive since 2002, except for a notable dropoff this past season caused mostly by an influx of new club teams.  For more information, download the Power Ratings Comparison, Type of School, 2000-2009.

The Wilmington area is surging in North Carolina high school lacrosse, and Triangle lacrosse has been the model of consistency.  The Triad peaked in 2004, but since then has dropped off a bit compared to other regions.  Not surprisingly, Charlotte has been the top high school lacrosse region in North Carolina in the last five years.  For more information, download the Regional Power Ratings Comparisons for NC, 2000-2009
